Who We Are
Kiwanis was founded in Detroit, Michigan on January 21, 1915 by professional organizer Allen Browne under the name "The Benevolent Order of Brothers". It's original purpose was the "mutual exchange of preferred treatment in professional and business dealings". Within a year, the name had been changed to "Kiwanis", taken from an American Indian term "Nun Keewanis", which means roughly "we share our talents", "we express ourselves", "we make noise", and, the purpose of the organization became "community service". It is this humanitarian concept from which Kiwanis has never deviated.
The Kiwanis Club of Excelsior Springs was founded November 25, 1922, hailed as a club aggressive to work for the growth and betterment of Excelsior Springs and vicinity, the club remains aggressive today in its efforts to provide quality activities for area families.

Motto:
The motto of the Kiwanis is "We Build." The interpretation of the motto means service to city, state and nation, closer fellowship and discharge of one's civic duties to his community.
Kiwanis Dues:
Kiwanis collects dues for International, District and Local activities. Dues are $130 per year and may be paid annually, bi-annually or quarterly, beginning October 1 or April 1. New members pay a one-time $25 new member fee. If you join in the middle of the year, you pay the $25 new member fee and then the option you chose beginning either April 1 or October 1, whichever comes first.
Kiwanis Responsibilities:
As a member of the Kiwanis Club, members are asked to commit to the following four responsibilities.
1. Attend club meetings. (See below for details.)
2. Participate in a minimum of two club projects each year. (See calendar for some examples.)
3. Sponsor a new member into the Kiwanis Club within your first year of membership.
4. If for some reason you have to leave the Club, don't leave without finding a replacement for yourself.
Meeting Place and Time:
Meetings begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays, and should be over by 7:30 p.m. Each meeting will normally consist of a meal, business session, and a program.
Board Meetings:
A board meeting is held on the first Wedneday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Tony's on Broadway for the purpose of conducting the business affairs of the club. Any member of the club may attend and use the attendance as a makeup for a missed meeting.
Interclub Meetings:
An interclub meeting is where at least four members of our club attend the meeting of another club. This is a good way to meet Kiwanians from other towns and create good club spiriti. These meetings can also be used to makeup a regular meeting you have missed.
